#offer What do you want to sacrifice? [hpJZ or ?*] h You offer the Amulet of Yendor to Amaterasu Omikami... An invisible choir sings, and you are bathed in radiance... The voice of Amaterasu Omikami booms: "Congratulations, mortal!" "In return for thy service, I grant thee the gift of Immortality!" You ascend to the status of Demigoddess... Do you want your possessions identified? [ynq] (n) Betty the Shogun St:18/** Dx:18 Co:18 In:23 Wi:23 Ch:18 Lawful Astral Plane $:2 HP:667(673) Pw:25(208) AC:-41 Exp:30 T:148750 Burdened So, as a samurai, I have ascended. My name is Betty. Why such a name? Well, my long blonde hair is tied back in a ponytail, and the stereotype has samurai with their hair tied back... plus I'm not sure I was intended to survive. I was the first lawful attempt at ascending, and was going genocideless like Rita, upping the challenge factor - but with all the wishes I found, how could I lose? My story started on October 18th, '07. When it ended on June 27th, midafternoon, '08, here's how I looked: FINAL ATTRIBUTES: ----------------- *You were piously aligned. *You were fire resistant. *You were cold resistant. *You were sleep resistant. *You were disintegration-resistant. *You were shock resistant. *You were poison resistant. *You were magic-protected. All pretty much standard fare to get to this point. But notice I was never actually /crowned/! My God didn't even have faith in me. *You could recognize detrimental food. Read blessed food detection shortly before ascending. *You resisted hallucinations. That would be Grayswandir. *You saw invisible. *You were telepathic. *You were invisible to others. *You were stealthy. *You could teleport. *You had teleport control. Ugh, these need slight explanation. Tengus are lawful, so I can't kill them. But my pets can. I suspect it was my white dragon named KD who offed one or two in mid-game, and I ate a corpse. Got teleportitis, and pretty much had to keep my tport control ring on after that. KD later died while I was riding him, on level 32, from a cockatrice, who appeared when I rode onto a magic trap. Sigh. Eventually got another pet. Morphed him up to an umber hulk, but then didn't want to destroy Julie's mazes, so used the morph trap on the level above, got a few useless things, then a winged gargoyle. Who apparently don't eat! Had a cursed scroll of genocide, so went into Sokoban and generated five tengu. Four of them peaceful, but not to my pet! Two leave a corpse, the second one giving me teleport control. (Which is good, the control ring was a type I couldn't eat.) Had some more genocide and unholy water just in case. *You could survive without air. I did my xorn morph trick to munch on rings, and my first amulet of breathing gave me this! (I'd already spoiled no polymorph; I'll speak of it when we get to my BoH.) *You had slower digestion. *You were protected. *You were very fast. *You had reflection. *You had free action. *You were very lucky. *You had extra luck. *Bad luck did not time out for you. *Good luck did not time out for you. *You survived. Which is nice; oh, my luckstone got unblessed through the planes (after I reblessed it before entering). Now, let's have a look at all the trinkets I have with me... POSSESSIONS: ------------ *AMULETS *t an uncursed amulet of reflection (being worn) I wanted reflection because of the lightning factor. I had a shield, but it would interfere with two-weapon and spellcasting. So I deemed this to beat life saving. Two issues with this turned up, one with Pestilence (I'll get to it later) and the other with Michael the Slayer. See, not long after my arrival I headed left, and Mike was only a few squares away. I went to take him out, and in response he wielded Vorpal Blade. (!) I zap with death, but it misses him (and he had silver scales anyway). Okay, NOW I need life saving. (The fact that Death unlocked and opened the door behind him didn't help calm me.) Fortunately, Mike seemed more interested in zapping his wand of sleep as I retreated. I took out life saving and shield, eqipped myself, by then Mike had arrived and we Meleed. Killed him before he could cut off my head, and strangely he left an amulet of life saving behind. (??) I switched everything back, stashed Vorpy, and with Death having wandered back inside, at that point decided to head for the middle, left be damned. *WEAPONS *f the blessed +6 Grayswandir (weapon in hand) *K a blessed +5 silver saber (alternate weapon; not wielded) Used Excalibur for most of the game, but for the endgame I decided two weapon with silver sabers was cooler. Wasn't two weaponing here because, well, see comestibles. *ARMOR *i a blessed rustproof +5 helm of brilliance (being worn) *E a blessed fireproof +5 robe named Sus15 (being worn) *G a blessed fireproof +4 pair of speed boots named 113200 (being worn) *I a blessed fireproof +5 pair of yugake (being worn) *N a blessed fireproof +3 T-shirt (being worn) *Q a blessed +5 gray dragon scale mail named Julie (being worn) Speed boots were rare! Named them after the turn I found them, which may well have been a wish. Never found gauntlets of dexterity (until Air - or gauntlets of power until Astral) but had a few +1 gloves and enchanted one of them up. Wished for the shirt (at +2), enchanted it to +3 before heading to the planes. The scale mail was Julie's, which I prefered to the silver scales I'd made. *COMESTIBLES *p an uncursed lizard corpse *J an uncursed lizard corpse *Z an uncursed cockatrice corpse Managed to keep two lizards on hand that way because of blessed IDing while I had an uncursed and unknown one. The cockatrice I killed on Astral, on the way into the middle when it appeared; wielding it may have saved me. In fact, 'trices were wielded rather a lot - the castle is full of soldier statues, and on Asmodeus' level, when I discovered that master liches won't follow you down on stairs, rather than taking the long way around, I went down until I got a corpse, then stoned him. Also see Orcus and Vlad, below. Oh, and there was a nest on level 25, that made for a bit of a scare at the time. *SPELLBOOKS *W the uncursed Book of the Dead Speaks for itself; incidentally, Moloch's High Priest had two spellbooks of cancellation (a new spell for me). *shrug* *RINGS *c an uncursed ring of protection from shape changers *C a blessed ring of slow digestion (on left hand) *T an uncursed ring of free action (on right hand) Blessed both worn rings before heading to the Planes. Shape changing was good in the mid-game for stupid sandestins and such posing as (master)liches. *WANDS *g a blessed wand of death (0:1) Wished for that one pre-Planes. Got it with 8 charges. *k a rusty wand of death named Die26 (1:4) First death, got it on level 26, apparently. Rusty because of the kelp fronds, below. *n a wand of wishing named panthr35 (1:0) *q a wand of wishing named JulieWish? (1:0) These were in ADDITION to the Castle wand. As a player, a wand of wishing has been found outside the castle only once - which was Julie, who found one in Sokoban, then died from a minotaur on 24 after falling through a trap door. Well, I got her Bones here, which included the wand. (Made for an interesting layout, Julie's maze BEFORE Medusa on 27, then a regular level on 28.) Later, a panther in the mazes on level 35 had one (?!). So items were NEVER a problem. *z a wand of fire (0:8) *D a wand of teleportation (0:1) There had been 4 charges in that wand upon arrival. *TOOLS *a the uncursed Candelabrum of Invocation (7 candles attached) *d a blessed +0 unicorn horn *e a blessed towel *x a blessed magic lamp named dl37 (lit) Blessed a bunch of stuff before hitting the Planes. *F an uncursed very rusty stethoscope Very rusty due to kelp fronds and then an attempt to dig down on Juiblex's level. I got a hole full of water, then failed to auto-tport out, but crawled to safety. *H an uncursed magic whistle *L a blessed bag of holding named HoldMe Oh, gods, the BoH. So, upon arrival at Astral, checking out the scene, there's an arch-lich on the far right. I know he'll be joining me soon, but I'm not too concerned; the last arch-lich appeared next to me, during the amulet run, along with other nasties on Medusa's level. I slashed at it (x2). Nothing moves. I slash at it again x2. Couple of things get a move, but not him. I slash at him x2 once more, and he's dust. Ha! Pushover! This time, Archy comes over, and one of the first things he does is unbless my bag of holding! Groan. I went from Burdened to Strained, so drop the bag to finish him off. Take out holy water, pick up bag, and rebless it. But then what happens after taking out Mike and Pestilence? A priest unblesses it again! I'm forced to repeat the actions, which nearly kills me because of how close Pesty got. (I'll get to that.) *X the cursed Bell of Opening (0:2) *Y an uncursed oilskin sack named Julie Apparently Julie's bag was oilskin. Nice. *GEMS *o an uncursed luckstone named Luk *r 12 blessed dilithium crystals Wished for the crystals using five wishes off the wands at the end. CONTENTS OF THE BoH named HoldMe: --------------------------------- *a cursed wand of magic missile (0:2) *a blessed wand of magic missile (0:8) Oh, that's amusing. The first taken with me, the latter picked up on Astral. *an uncursed ring of conflict named conflict Not needed after Fire and Water. (Named because it was IDed before scroll of IDed.) *the +0 Sting *the blessed +0 Orcrist Created on the spot just before reading blessed scroll of food. *an uncursed rusty skeleton key named Julie Don't recall if it was the first key, but did have to kick down all the doors in Sokoban. Kept for nostaglia despite the rust. *a wand of light (0:13) Picked up en route, was going to use it on Astral, forgot. *an uncursed +2 ring of increase damage Swapped off for free action, belatedly, after Pesty's battle. *an uncursed potion of healing *a cursed potion of extra healing *an uncursed potion of full healing Picked up off dead folks towards the end. *an uncursed amulet of life saving named Mikes *an uncursed amulet of life saving named GreenAir Mike I talked about. A green dragon on the Plane of Air also had one (?!). *an uncursed agate stone *an uncursed potion of sickness I didn't want Pesty getting this. She was powerful enough already. *3 uncursed rubies *4 uncursed potions of full healing named use Started with /11/ full healing and two blessed extra healing. Nearly died a horrible death. See, after getting my bag of holding blessed again, Pesty revived and I was hemmed in by two priests, a black dragon, and insects. (And Maud, but she died quickish.) Pesty evaded two death blasts, putting her in melee range. (Yes, HER. Later in the game I get the message, "Pestilence zaps herself with a wand of speed monster!" Apparently, she's female!!) At first, no biggie, because Cure Sickness spell was at 0%. But then I ran out of Pw. And because she Stuns too, I can't effectively hit her; I end up wailing on the black dragon. Rising fear begins, along with knowledge that I'm not wearing life saving, I'm wearing reflection. I pull out the extra healing potions from my bag. What a relief! But now I'm having to use the unihorn to try and stay unstunned. Honestly, I'd like to use my unstunned turns to move AWAY, but the ants and bees are preventing it. Full healing were stashed in two sets; pull out the set of 5, get Stressed but one drink and I'm back to Burdened. Unihorn, quaff, slash, stunned, flail arms, quaff... after I burn through those I notice power at 23. Feeling worse, I try to Cure Sickness, but the Amulet ensures I don't have the power. I pull out the last batch of full healing. I think I had a free move in there. I think it saved me. (My max HP are increasing but I don't care, I need to not be sick!) I tried zapping teleport randomly but I don't think anything changed. I manage to kill a bee and step away; Pesty follows. A priest is in the doorway, and I remember I have a cockatrice corpse, so now there's a statue in the doorway. Quaff again, then try a death blast for luck... FINALLY Pesty gets hit with it. Closest we've come to a death on Astral in a while. Hastened my way in towards the altar. *2 uncursed topaz stones *3 uncursed jade stones *a wand of death named PFire (0:0) *a wand of death (0:0) Is there a guaranteed wand of death on Fire? A salamander has had one, like, twice. It had four charges. Not sure where the other one came from... not Orcus, his freaking exploded. *11 potions of holy water *an uncursed obsidian stone *an uncursed +0 shield of reflection named Pers Killed Perseus twice, got his shield. See below. *the greased +7 Vorpal Blade *an uncursed sapphire *an uncursed garnet stone *an uncursed obsidian stone *an uncursed chrysoberyl stone *an uncursed opal *an uncursed turquoise stone *a wand of create monster (0:11) *an uncursed ring of levitation That completes everything that got shoved into the bag on the Astral Plane. Just a couple of highlights from here on down. *the blessed rustproof +0 Sunsword Took a bit of time tooling around on Earth Plane, enough time for an Archon to appear. He was peaceful! (Of course - he's lawful.) But being the first Archon, he probably has an artifact weapon. So I wish up a cockatrice corpse and clock him... which is dishonourable, but got me Sunsword. *2 uncursed tins of Wizard of Yendor meat The Wizard was NEVER a problem. Ever. Killed him once in the tower, then didn't see him again until the Plane of Earth. Where he Double Troubled twice as my Death Spell didn't go off, but still, those were the only two places I saw him. Tinned him in memory of that. *a wand of cold (1:11) Just a cool number of charges for a wand of cold. *a wand of teleportation named Julie (0:2) I kept a bunch of her stuff. *2 +0 stilettos I just like these. I don't know why. *an uncursed amulet of reflection named Julie Didn't wear it only because I wore the one from Sokoban. *an uncursed amulet of change Ah yes... had to burn one of these when for a large portion of the early to mid game I was walking around as a GUY. Most embarassing; may have been polymorph? Either way, spoiled unchanging. *a +0 yumi *17 +0 ya Kept the original equipment! Never found any new ya. *50 uncursed kelp fronds *38 uncursed kelp fronds Ah yes, the 88 kelp fronds. See, the first Quest level has water, but really they're all just pits with water in them, as discovered when hellhounds kept breathing fire at me. Some pits had fronds. Late in the game, I decided to grab some wands of fire, burn off the water and see how many fronds I could get. That's the result. It's also why some things are rusty, because in between quaffing object detection, putting on levitation to get to the area, then taking it off to fall into pits, I got crossed up and tried to walk on water. Whoops - teleportitis got me to safety. *the blessed rustproof +7 Excalibur *the blessed +0 Tsurugi of Muramasa Mostly used Excalibur; didn't use the Tsurugi much, and death zapped my Nemesis to get it. Then zapped the ronin that picked the thing up. (Roll eyes.) Did train a bit on a two-handed sword bought in the shop on level 2, where my stash ended up being. (Next to a converted altar.) *a blessed +1 silver dagger Far too sweet of a weapon to leave behind. *the rustproof +0 Stormbringer *the rustproof +0 Snickersnee The latter from early sacrificing, the former from Julie. *an uncursed red dragon egg ...boy, kept a lot of junk in here too... *127475 gold pieces Gold includes everything from Ludios, which I cleared out just before going to face the Wizard. *a magic marker (1:61) Generated though a polymorph I think; they never charge that high. Only used once. (Had burned an early wish on a blessed magic marker, to turn uncursed blank scrolls into blessed ID scrolls. That one got depleted.) *3 uncursed scrolls of genocide named 300 Never used, but given what happened to Julie on Water... *a very rusty +3 athame named arch42 Some arch-lich on level 42... I also left a couple lesser charged athame's behind. *a rustproof wand of magic missile (0:3) Just weird. Who rustproofs these? *an uncursed amulet of life saving named lev39 Someone left one of these on level39... along with Vlad's, and the two found ascending, that's four! *Contents of the oilskin sack named Julie: *an uncursed lembas wafer *2 potions of holy water *an uncursed lizard corpse I never seem to use the stuff in the mini-sack. It even got cursed down in the Sanctum. No potions of gain level in there, by the way... that's because I was only level 26 facing the Wizard, and the four potions found on the way up I quaffed to reach Shogun status. So, that's MOST of the interesting stories, but let's have a look at the kill stats... CREATURES VANQUISHED: --------------------- *Asmodeus *Baalzebub *Orcus (10 times) Ah, yes. I killed a cockatrice just outside his place, which left a corpse. So I stoned him when he teleported over. Towards the end game, I decided to have some fun. I actually had to burn two wishes to do it, one on a blessed spellbook of stone to flesh, the other on a new cockatrice corpse. (Also burned a wish on a spellbook of finger of death.) Zapped stone to flesh. Smacked Orcus with the corpse. Rinse, repeat. He usually got a turn in there, but usually burned it on zapping his wand of death. I didn't care much, being immune, until his wand suddenly EXPLODED. It must have been cursed! He then started being a more active threat, and my power was down, so I whacked him with the corpse again and let him be. Used the last charge on Julie's wand of probing to assess his state later. He had a scroll of create monster. I left the statue where it was. *Yeenoghu *Juiblex Don't even remember Yeenoghu. Juiblex was an interesting case though, as he /never/ engulfed me! I'd accidentally overshot his level through a trap door, then came up into his swamp invisible and stealthy. Snuck up on him, and took him down in a few hits. He also left a scroll of create monster. *The Wizard of Yendor (4 times) As stated, once in the tower, three times consecutively in Earth. I'd expected more, particularly seeing as how I figured I'd be trapped in Gehennom for a while. My pathway there actually went like this: 49, Sanctum, black glow... heading up. 48/47/46/45->48 (nervous; 'trice; tport) 47/46/45/44/43/42/41/40 (tport)/39/38->40 ->40 (nc) 39/38/37->38 (nervous; tport; mlich) 37/36/35->37 36->38 ->39 ->40 39 (nerv; mlich-wea)/38/37/36/35 (monst)/34/33 (tport)/32->34 (glow) 33/32/31 (nervous)/30 (glow) 29-out *Pestilence (5 times) *Famine For Pesty, once before entering the middle, once after the Big Scare, once while chasing a tourist, once while chasing Famine, and (I think?) once near the end. For Famine, well... s/he unlocked and opened her(?) door as I was tooling with the tourist, and I figured I'd wander out to give him(?) a death zap. *5 arch-liches *a high priest *7 mastodons *Medusa (thrice) *Croesus Mastodons are more powerful than Medusa? Incidentally, after doing stone to flesh on her, she apparently didn't succumb to my amulet of reflection. Had to drop down to the castle and get a looking glass to apply to her to kill her the other two times. *8 krakens Fastest trip through the Water Plane EVER. Got to the portal bubble within two bubble walks towards the right. Didn't kill any kraken there, though did have conflict. *an Archon Archon was from Earth, to get Sunsword. *10 iron golems *12 master liches *10 storm giants *a titan Titan was from Medusa's level... peaceful, but I got a dragon to off him. (Not KD... this was the dragon I got after polymorphing my winged gargoyle. Also fed that dragon the shopkeeper on level 2 and the animals in his shop to raise his level first.) Okay, skipping some of the next kills. *14 demiliches *Vlad the Impaler (11 times) Oh, stop here! After offing Orcus many times, I went down to deal with Vlad, who I'd also kept for the end. Did have a close call in his lower level early on, by the way - had stripped down for a nurse, only to have a demilich spawn in there! Got armour back on before there was a touch of death. Got gloves on also, for a cockatrice that had been generated, managed to kill it, then stone the damn demilich. Scary. But back to Vlad. Unfortunately, the Orcus corpse rotted away by the time I got in there. I didn't really want to burn another wish, so I went up in search of other 'trices I'd left around. The one on Baal's level didn't leave a corpse, but the one on Asmo's level did. I began my plunge back to Vlad's. (This is where I dug in at Juiblex's level and nearly drowned.) Made it in record time, and started playing the same game with Vlad as I had with Orcus. When I ran out of stone-to-flesh Power, I tooled around (still with my dragon), and kept playing until the corpse rotted away. Once more for good measure, and he was dust. Left my dragon behind there, actually. *16 master mind flayers I think the last one I killed was on Plane Earth, stoning him with the same corpse as I'd used on the Archon. (Dropped the amulet to ID the sunsword, forgot to pick it up, had to go back for it, and the flayer was there by then.) Also a statue of a flayer in the temple for the Valley of Death; that took two whacks, I "heard chewing" - he'd had a lizard corpse. Got sucked by a flayer of some sort at least once too, and forgot stuff, grumble. *3 Nazguls Only? *a shopkeeper From level 2, killed by dragon. *a guard Was harassing me as I was dealing with a nurse from Ludios. *The Oracle Killed by dragon, which is becoming a bad habit of mine. Incidentally, her level was 9, quite low for normal, and it had a magic trap which would NOT explode. In the late game it ended up surrounded by statues and lots of misc junk; a flayer popped out at one point too, but my pet dealt with him. *a barbarian That would be Michael the Slayer, from Astral. (Paul the Chieftain, on the far right, remained safe.) *a caveman That would be Dean the Roamer, from Astral. *2 knights That's Perseus, who I figured to be unique, like Medusa. But no. (He was also peaceful, and killed by my dragon both times before his corpse got eaten.) Oh well. *11 samurai In the Quest. Decided to have some fun later with a guy who was still alive; killed him, then brought him back. He came back peaceful(!). *a tourist Ken the Voyager, on Astral. After determining that the middle temple was mine (I'd finally lucked out), I decided to chase him down as he was tooling around in behind it. Pesty revived and followed me around as Ken took off for the outside area; killed Pesty, then the tourist, then kept going out to zap down Famine who was en route. (Then hurried back in, lest I simply seem suicidal.) *a valkyrie Maud the Swashbuckler, who I killed just before the big scary battle with Pesty. *8 dwarf kings One on a lower maze level kept killing the pets I sent against him, until finally I used KD. He was using his pickaxe or whatever to make a right mess of the area near the stairs and throne room. *21 tengu More than I realized... stupid teleportitis. *120 soldiers That's a lot. *144 wolves That's more. (Quest problem, basically.) *38 lizards *20 ninja Ninjas are way down here, below lizards?! Oh well; also Quest, and when I revived one he came back hostile, then didn't leave a corpse. *18 floating eyes Kept a bunch (3?) of these floating around on level 2 with my stash, because I had no tinning kit until the end and didn't want to lose telepathy to any stupid action. *5040 creatures vanquished. Not a bad total! Speaking of which, I think I'll hold the local record not only for deaths of Vlad and Orcus, as well as kelp fronds collected, but also for wishes... in addition to the three wands, there were also two blessed lamps. (The third which I held I thought about rubbing, but Famine had just come into my temple through the strangely missing door and evaded a death blast to stand next to me.) CONDUCT: -------- *You never genocided any monsters. *You used 16 wishes. *You did not wish for any artifacts. Woo! I also kept my Guardian Angel, who bulked up from my arrival when she was Lvl 16, 141(141), to Lvl 21, 80(168)... give a little, since I cast extra healing on her at the end. I guess now that I've taken inventory, I'll go and join everyone else for some rest. Though I'm usually modest, this was a good run, hm? Sayonara Betty the Demigoddess...
