With apologies to the late, great

THE CLASSICAL MUSIC MARKETPLACE:
ACCESS THROUGH
E-MAIL, WEB PAGES AND
TOLL-FREE TELEPHONE NUMBERS
A list for classical music buyers
Many people have found that while companies are eager to sell us their
compact discs, they are less willing to offer friendly, easy access to
their customer service departments for comments, suggestions or
complaints. This is beginning to change, but it remains true that smaller
classical labels are more attentive to customer contact than the giants.
I'm a frequent reader of USENET groups devoted to classical music, and one
continuing request is for web sites, E-mail addresse and toll free
telephone numbers, a need I have taken upon myself to satisfy with the
list below. It is currently being revised, and if you need a current and
very complete one, you might try the list developed by
Music Web,
which is UK-centric, just as this one was constructed from a U.S.
perspective. (I've borrowed extensively from it in updating this list.) A
group devoted to Early Music has created an up-to-date
list of labels which record in their area of interest, although they
tend to include companies whose New Age sympathies extend to Hidegard and
other ethereal-sounding composers,
I have no interest in promoting any specific company, other than to remind
all that if buyers don't support classical music with purchases small
labels will cease to exist and large ones will think they are serving
"culture" with "Best Of" collections. Lack of classical specialty stores
plague music-lovers in many areas, a vacuum somewhat filled by the advent
of Internet on-line retailers that claim the ability to obtain even the
most obscure titles. Here's a link to an On-Line Classical Stores FAQ
that is international in scope. Many people find it useful.
The compilation which follows also includes active E-mail
addresses which will work if your server supports mailto forms. Most
web pages include some place to send comments by e-mail as well, although
a disturbing trend by the largest companies is to fill their sites with
pages of propoganda but leave no way to make an inquiry. Small labels
know better: we are their lifeblood, and they want to hear from us.
Good listening!
Brendan Wehrung
- PLEASE NOTE THAT TOLL FREE ("800/888/877/866") NUMBERS ARE INTENDED FOR
THE CONTINENTAL U.S. UNLESS OTHERWISE MENTIONED, AND MAY NOT WORK FROM
CANADA. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO LIST CANADIAN NUMBERS, IF SUPPLIED. While
some companies are happy to sell you CDs directly, I have deliberately
not included online stores. There's a very good
Online Classical-CD Stores FAQ if you wish to consult it.
- I try to update this list periodically, but
there will be a few
numbers/addresses that don't work. Let me know if you find any.

For those looking for online stores, the Online Classical CD Stores
FAQ is a good place to start. The plusses and pitfalls of many are
discussed.
If you know of a valid record company e-mail address or web site intended
for the general public not included on this page, send it to me and I will
consider it for inclusion.
ACCEPTANCE POLICY
This list does not include stores, although
some manufacturers and distributors will sell directly to callers (usually
at list price plus shipping). I reserve the exclusive right to accept or
exclude any submission. Any contents are based on my experience
with various sites.
DISCLAIMER
I created this list on the premise that if classical CD buyers don't tell
companies what we need/want/desire they may never know. I make no claims
of accuracy for the items listed--telephone numbers change (and those
that remain valid may change to an answering service whole sole mission
is to send out catalogs); web sites are cancelled or moved; and, sadly,
some companies feel no more obligation to answer E-mail than they do
messages received by post.
