An interesting feature of Nostradamus' anagrams is to see them fit even the most irregular texts, like the titles of his books. In such a case, the length of his encyphered lines varies considerably from one to the other, thereby making the odds that a perfectly good French sentence is hidden there by the author of that very title much greater than chance alone.

This hourglass feature helps the reader see that the fate of the entire sentence rests upon very few letters, the shortest lines being a test for the authenticity of the entire anagrammed text.

The example below is derived from some of the lesser known writings by Nostradamus:

01.------------------------- AU GRAND'
02.------------------ PARIS : « TON SI BON
03.--------------- ALLYÉ ONC NE VEULT TE TVER
04.------------ EN AOUST DEUX MIL DIX VII, CAR IL
05.------- PENSE TIRER SON ATOME À LA CHINE COMMUNISTE
06.------- DEDANS LA RUDE T'IEN AN MEN, ET TU ES OCCIS
07.---------------------- POUR RIEN CE
08.------ FOL TREIZE AOUST FORT ANNONCÉ ICY, TEXTE QUE
09.------- TES MAGISTRATS ONT OSÉ IUGER SI IMMORAL QUE
10.--------- TU ES MORT COMME MA BONNE PROSE LE DIT
11.---------------- ICY ! », DIGNE ORACLE QVE
12.------------------------- PARIS A
13.--- RECEU EN RIANT, CAR LE SI GRAND US N'EST SI PANIQUÉ
14.-------------------- ET SI CHOCQUÉ DE
15.-------------------------- RAGE.

Which, for the gallically challenged, could read thus:

01.---------------------- TO THE GREAT
02.------------------ PARIS : « THY SO GOOD
03.-------------- ALLY NEVER WANTS TO KILL THOU
04.------ IN AUGUST TWO THOUSAND AND SEVENTEEN, FOR HE
05.---- THINKS OF FIRING HIS ATOM TOWARDS COMMUNIST CHINA
06.------ TO THE RUDE T'IEN AN MEN, AND THOU ART SLAIN
07.-------------------- FOR NOTHING THAT
08. FOOLISH THIRTEENTH OF AUGUST MUCH ANNOUNCED HERE, A TEXT WHICH
09.---- THY MAGISTRATES HAVE DARED IUDGE SO IMMORAL THAT
10.----- THOU HAVE DIED JUST AS MY GOOD PROSE SO STATES
11.------------- HERE ! », A WORTHY ORACLE WHICH
12.----------------------- PARIS HATH
13. RECEIUED LAUGHING, SINCE THE SO GREAT US IS NOT THAT PANICKED
14.-------------------- AND SO CHOCKED BY
15.-------------------------- RAGE.

As can be seen, lines 7 and 12 contain fewer letters than the others (line 15 is a special case), thereby making the continuity of the hidden sentence depend on these critical lines, something more difficult to ascribe to chance alone.

For the last line, Nostradamus cheated! On top of being a cryptic anagram, that line involves a substitution of letters for numbers, something already found in the title of two of the original editions of the Prophecies.

And the original text from which these anagrams were derived? The front page of the Prognostication for 1557, which follows:

01.------------------------- LA GRAND'
02.--------------- P R O N O S T I C A T I O N
03.---------------- NOVVELLE AVEC PORTENTEV-
04.---------- se prediction ,pour l'AnM.D.L V I I.
05.------- Composee par Maistre Michel de nostre Dame,
06.---------- Docteur en Medicine de Salon de Craux
07.----------------------- en Prouence
08.----- Contre ceux qui tant de foys m'ont faict mort,
09.------- Immortalis ero viuus , moriensque . magisque
10.--------- Post mortem nomen viuet in orbe meum.
-------------------------- [vignette]
11.----------------- AVEC PRIVILEGE DV ROY.
12.------------------------- A PARIS
13.---- Par Iaques Keruer,Rue sainct Iaques à l'enseigne
14.-------------------- des deux cochetz.
15.-------------------------- I557.

Clever, eh, this Nostradamus?! :-)
