Sam refused to discuss it. Amanda was hurt. He apologized. She apologized. They love each other. Kissing. He asked her to stay with him. She said she didn't think she could. He pled. The phone rang. Mac asked Sam to meet him.
Mary and Jason waited. Jason said he wasn't sure Michael would be able to get into the safety deposit box. He wouldn't let Mary out of his sight because of her injudicious conversation with That Old Carrot. Donna came in and asked Jason [with great, indeed excessive Emotion] if he had been the cause of her mother's death.
That Old Carrot lurked. He rapped on the door of the bank and insisted that the guard let him in to see the bank manager. He showed him his court order. The guard let him in.
Michael and Adam and some bank guy opened the safety deposit box. Inside they found a stack of papers with a signed statement which declared the papers incriminating. And all the people rejoiced. Theft. Fraud. Violation of international trade agreements. Murder. They thanked Mr Clay and left. That Old Carrot came in the other way and demanded that Mr Clay open the box for him. Mr Clay told him he was too late. The Carrot asked who had been there. Mr Clay told him. He looked dazed and left without speaking.
Donna told Mary she knew what she'd told her but how could she be sure she wasn't protecting Jason. Donna finds it significant that they dine together. Jason insisted she sit down. Donna blamed him for causing That Old Carrot's dislike of Michael and retreated. Mary wished they could tell Donna the truth. Michael called with the good news. Mary and Jason headed for the police station. Donna sniffled at a table and ran out suddenly.
Sam looked strange. Amanda told him Mac was coming around. Sam looked apprehensive. Amanda tried to reassure him. He worried about his clothes. Amanda said she'd wait for him. He was about to leave. She felt queasy. Sam was concerned. She told him to leave.
André wandered into the police station and spotted Lisa filing in Adam's office. Adam and Michael staggered in giggling and generally behaving with giddy foolishness. Adam told Lisa they had her to thank for psychicking the watch. Michael kissed Lisa and told Adam to kiss her. Adam kissed her very far around her cheek. [I do not mean the kiss trailed around her face, but that he did not come close to her lips.] He told her no more André. Lisa rushed off to attend the family dinner. Adam watched her with admiration. Michael danced around. Adam arranged for an APB on That Old Carrot. Michael found an envelope on the floor and pocketed it. Mary and Jason arrived. Mary told Michael about Donna's suspicions. Michael waited for her so they could go see Donna together.
That Old Carrot wandered around Elizabeth's bedroom looking like someone with a headache. He thought of Nicole in a wig trying to look as though her lips were a different size allowing Jason to kiss her neck while an expression of bored ecstasy fixed itself on her face. They turned into Donna and Michael in more or less the same attitude, bathed in a red light. That Old Carrot shuddered and breathed heavily. He telephoned André to confirm his private plane. He ordered him to lure Michael out to the Love estate alone.
Lisa found Mac in Mary's Place. She'd phoned the Romance and learned the dinner was off. He told her he was meeting Sam to try to find the right foot. She confessed she'd found him intimidating at first. Mac was astonished. Mac: what did I do? Lisa: NOTHING. You were charming and gracious, and — Mac: but intimidating. Lisa: yes. Mac: maybe it's the hair. Lisa: no. You're the famous Mac Cory, everybody knows about you, everybody's read about you in magazines — Mac: stop. I'm beginning to intimidate myself. She assured him she hadn't been intimidated for too long. She decided to take food to Jamie. Sam arrived. Mac and Sam spoke reasonably. Michael dashed in looking for Donna. She was nowhere in sight. Michael said he didn't want Donna wandering around alone with That Old Carrot on the loose.
When Lisa got into her car André sat up in the back seat and clamped his gloved hand over her mouth. [Maybe I'm excessively cautious, but I lock all my doors when I get out and peer into the back seat before I get into my car.] He accused her of not being called Roxie and said she was going to make a phone call for him.
That Old Carrot hid behind the door as Donna entered Elizabeth's bedroom weeping and breathing loudly. She gazed sentimentally at a photograph and removed her coat. She told the photograph she understood that Jason had killed her. That Old Carrot revealed himself and said that Donna was like her mother in that she was weak and stubborn and had an appetite for stableboys. Donna told him Elizabeth had loved Jason and not him. He told her Jason had been a habit for Elizabeth. She had deserved to die for her addiction. Donna was appalled. He droned on about the sanctity of marriage. Elizabeth's infidelities [not only with Jason] had driven him into Mary's arms. She accused him of lying. They argued about love and sex. He became agitated and raved about stopping Elizabeth and Michael. He said Michael wouldn't live until morning.
André held a gun to Lisa's head and made her phone Michael. She told him Adam had asked her to tell him they'd captured That Old Carrot in Elizabeth's room and Adam wanted him to come out there immediately. Michael agreed readily. Lisa tried to put André in his mind by talking about the lounge [earlier she had referred to André as a lounge lizard] but Michael just said the Love mansion didn't have a lounge and rang off.
Mac apologized to Sam for his occasional lack of tact. They argued about it so long Mac drifted into tactlessness. When Sam started to smoulder Mac insisted they change the subject.
Donna told That Old Carrot Michael was out of town. That Old Carrot assured her that Michael was on his way over. He said he'd kill Michael and leave the country with her. "They shoot horse trainers, don't they?" he said with an insane titter. Donna tried to use Jason as a red herring. Donna ran shrieking and sobbing from the room. He caught her at the door. She broke away and ran upstairs. [That's always the most sensible thing to do — run to a place without an exit.] He pursued her and caught her again. She squealed and screamed.
Amanda cuddled a teddy bear and thought about Sam giving it to her. There was a knock at the door. Amanda let the woman in and chattered away about the baby and the loft, thinking it was the landlady with a bundle of baby clothes. The woman looked perplexed.
That Old Carrot tied Donna to a chair and gagged her. She wept. They heard Michael drive up. Donna struggled. That Old Carrot shut the door behind him.
Michael called to Adam and, getting no answer, headed for Elizabeth's bedroom. That Old Carrot came downstairs and followed him, gun in hand.
Amanda was surprised that the woman knew nothing about the baby. Gradually it dawned on her that it wasn't the landlady. She asked who she was. Sam came in and introduced Amanda to his mother.
Mary and Jason discussed the events of the day. Jason said he thought it was strange that Adam's capture had been so easy. They decided to go after Michael.
Donna struggled.
Michael found Donna's discarded coat. That Old Carrot shot him. Michael fell.
