Cass admired Nicole's dress. She asked for a hint about their destination. He hummed the "One Fine Day" business from Madame Butterfly; She guessed they were going to a laundromat to listen to the spin cycle. She admired his outfit. They went to the opera. She was pleased and awed by his extravagance. They're in a box. They drank champagne.
Amanda told her parents she'd already heard Sam was staying. Mac annoyed her so she said she was going to talk to Sam. She told them they couldn't make her decisions for her. Rachel told Mac she was right.
Lisa invited Dawn and Scott to come along to the Powerhouse. Left alone with Scott, Jamie told him they intended to start Dawn on AZT tomorrow as long as she was over the pneumocystitis. Scott asked him not to talk about AIDS tonight. Dawn reappeared. Jamie gave permission for her to start school tomorrow. Dawn was delighted.
Nicole wept and fled from the box. Cass followed and consoled her. Nicole said her mother had committed suicide.
Mac told Rachel he wished he could like Sam but he couldn't stand the way Sam treated Amanda. Rachel warned him he could alienate Amanda.
Kirk ogled women in the Powerhouse. Sam told Kirk and Jim he thought he should look for another job. Kirk got an idea. Adam and Vicky and Jamie and Lisa and Don and Scott arrived. A guy recognized Dawn and told another guy he'd heard she quit Tops because she had AIDS. Scott overheard. Jamie ran into Sam and expressed surprise when he said he had decided not to go to Paris. Amanda popped up and asked why. Sam told her he felt responsible and he wouldn't be bought off. Amanda said she had to know how he felt about her. He looked away. She rushed to the door. Vicky intercepted her.
Nicole apologized for having fallen apart. Madame Butterfly never got to her like this before. When she was 14 there was a fire started by her mother. The opera ended.
Vicky was nice to Amanda and told her to call if she wanted to talk. Amanda left. Vicky deduced that Amanda was pregnant and asked Jamie about it. Scott confronted the guy who had recognized Dawn. The guy told him he didn't want Dawn to be there. Scott said she only wanted to have a good time. The guy said she had already had her good time and now she had AIDS and probably Scott did too and they should get out. Scott slugged him. Adam and Jamie dragged him off. Adam drove the pigs out and scolded Scott. Dawn got hysterical. Jamie told her the offender was just a misinformed creep. Kirk wandered off again and phoned Joyce.
Mac told Amanda she'd been right and he shouldn't interfere. They made up.
Cass found Kathleen's galleys had been delivered while they were out. Nicole asked permission to look. Cass went to change.
Rachel found Amanda brooding alone. Amanda doesn't like the way Sam constantly harps on responsibility.
Jim told Sam if he was willing to ignore the seductive lure of Paris for Amanda she must mean a lot to him.
Nicole was fascinated to read about Cass. He told her she'd find love someday. She thanked him for the opera. He said good night. She gazed at her mother some more and wondered again what That Old Carrot knew about her.
