I know this page is out of date and looks like shit, but I'm too busy to
do anything about it. Hang in there!
News flash:
Check out Green Day live in concert from New York City tomorrow night
(Oct. 4th, 2000, 9 pm EST), broadcast live on the web! (Click below).
This page is dedicated to punk rock, more specifically newschool punk.
Newschool punk, or melodic hardcore, is fast, melodic, fun and serious at
points, and features powerful vocals,
machine-gun drumming, pounding bass, and searing guitars. The lyrics are
sometimes fun and silly, and other times serious and inspiring. All in all,
it is excellent "pre-fabbin' before the surf" music, and will always charge
you with energy - it makes you feel good!
Disclaimer: Considering some responses on my guestbook about this page, I
thought I'd make something clear right now. I do not claim to be punker than
you. In fact, I am probably considerably less "punker" than you. I do not
dye or spike my hair. I do not have body piercings. No tattoos. (Of course,
I have no problem with people who choose to adopt these styles--unless
they think it makes them somehow cooler or "more punk"). I guess my
"style" is what some
would call "skate-punk". I do not like to mosh so I hurt everyone around
me. In fact, I like watching shows rather going into the pit. I like
oldschool punk, not just newschool. It's all punk (labelling
just makes it easier to classify). Punk is not a style, it's a way of
thinking and, if you choose, living. I will not try to define what
"being" punk really is, because everybody has their individual opinions.
Just remember the unity, the music, the feeling, the energy, and the fun of
punk rock.
Enough rhetoric, let's get to the music!
Hey before my review of Sno Jam 3 last year, here's a link for Sno Jam 4,
to see whose playing when and where: SNO JAM 4. Pennywise and
Guttermouth are headlining the two Toronto shows.
I went to see Sno-Jam when it came through Toronto for two nights, March
28 and 29, 1997. It was awesome! The venue, The Opera House, is really
great. It has a great mosh pit and bar area, so you can take breaks
from either or. Here's short mini-reviews of all the bands that played:
March 28 @ The Opera House
The Tirekickers - This southern Ontario band (they play 70's Oi mixed
with newswchool I guess) were ok. There weren't a lot of kids in when they
started cause the doors were opened so late, but they dealt with it.
Reset - These guys are from Montreal, and they're really young (like 17-18
range) and really good. They play fast melodic punk rock with metal-influenced
guitars (their kick ass guitarist looks like he's straight from a Slayer
concert).
They played excellent, and i picked up their CD "No Worries" after the
show - it really rocks.
Straight Faced - O.C. "thrash-punk-hardcore." Played a great show, they
weren't as
tight as they could've been, but that's probably cause they got a new
guitarist just recently. Johnny, the vox, made sure halfway through the
set to say a big "get the fuck out" to any racists in the building and
stated that "racism has no place in the punk/hardcore scene." Like we
needed reminding, but it was cool, and everyone cheered mightily. I picked up
one of their CD's "Broken" and it's really wicked.
Bodyjar - Australian pop-punkers. They played really well, not as good as
i expected but still really great.
Satanic Surfers - Swedish melodic punk rock. Played an awesome show (2nd
best after Good Riddance - see below), and I just have to say that
Rodrigo, the drummer and singer, is an amazing drummer, AND he sings at
the same time!
Good Riddance - no intro necessary. Santa Cruz's finest cleaned up and put
on a wicked show, my favourite of both nights. Just awesome.
March 29 @ The Opera House
10 Days Late - Pretty boring stuff, an all-girl band (from Vancouver), but
that's not why it was boring of course! The music wasn't very
fast, and they were more hard rock than punk. Also, their whole set
sounded like the same song.
Pridebowl - Swedish melodic punk. I really like these guys, they're really
nice, and they play great stuff. They did a great set, with lots of
energy. I picked up their new CD, "Where You Put Your Trust"; it's a lot
more varied than "Drippings of the Past," but because of that it takes a
while for it too grow on you. Pretty heartfelt-type songs.
Stealth - Rage Against the Machine-type music. Didn't really fit in with
the rest of the bands on the bill (like 10 Days Late, but these guys had
better songs) so,
while they played well, the crowd didn't really get into it (we tried!).
The bassist is the old bassist for Bad Brains.
No Fun at All - Swedish melodic punk. They aren't my fave, but they put on
a really good show.
SNFU - the Canadian legends. I don't really like SNFU, but they are just
so amazing live, it's hard not to like them. I mean they had peanut
throwing, fire-blowing and all this weird shit! and they rocked!
Diesel Boy - It's too bad these guys had to go on after SNFU, cause they
aren't as popular, and not as good. HOwever, the crwod still loved em, and
they put on a good show. A little too poppy punk for me, but still really
good. Titty Twister is of course, one of my fave songs of all time though!
All in all, best $27 punk-related bucks I ever spent! An awesome
double-header, eventhough the first night was better.
This band paved the way for the newschool era; simply put, they are legends!
Their lyrics are truly amazing, my favourite songs being "Modern Man" and
"I want to Conquer the World".
Pennywise, signed on Epitaph, is my favourite punk band ever! I love every
single song they've done! The guitar work is phenomenal, and their lyrics
range in topic from teenage angst to the shit that's going on in the world
today, whether domestic, political or whatever. And when they add their
kick ass music ( music they can call their own) to these insightful lyrics
- whammo you've got one wicked band.
There is a E-Mail mailing list for Pennywise fans. Just send email to pml@sprynet.com with the word "SUBSCRIBE"
in the Subject header. You can also go to the Pennywise mailing list home
page!
Lagwagon is another one of my most favourite punk bands. They hail from
Goleta, California (just outside of Santa Barbara), and they play fast,
melodic punk, with a mixture of fun and serious lyrics! It's good stuff.
88 Fingers is from Chicago, and have one full-length CD
out on Hopeless records, with 12 songs. They also have another album out
on Hopeless called "88 Fingers Up your Ass" , which is a compilation of
all their stuff that hasn't been released on CD, and a few new songs too,
and a few live tracks. Finally, they have an CD EP on Fat
called "The Dom Years" but it ain't that great. Unfortunately, 88 Fingers
broke up recently, but Joe and Dan are looking to get together another band.
They play some more "oldschool" stuff too, which is cool. One of my favourite
bands, I recommend them highly!
band!
Another amazing Epitaph band; their CD "Rev" and their new one
"Unleashed" are both really cool, and the
album artwork is killer! They also have an old CD called "Swill" which is
pretty good, and a split with Satanic Surfers (on Bad Taste) with three
really good songs (Gnarly charlie is one of my fave TFP songs ever!). They
have a very unique sound, distinct from other newschool bands today.
On Fat Wreck Chords, these Californian newschoolers are kicking ass! The
most recent album out is called "Making Friends", and while it isn't as
good as their last one "Leche Con Carne", it stills stands up
straight. The last one, as I said, is called "!Leche Con Carne!" (which means
"Milk with
Meat" in Spanish, in case you didn't know), and is full of great songs, like
Soulmate, 51 Days, Fields of Agony, Justified Black Eye, and a awesome
rendition of Bob Marley's classic Redemption Song. Like Pennywise, all
their songs have a meaning, whether of crappy relationships or political,
social and environmental problems we face everyday.
???
From Santa Cruz, CA, comes this wicked band - Luke Pabich (guitar/backing
vocals), Sean "SC" Sellers (drums/goatee), Russ Rankin (vocals) and Chuck
Platt (bass/backing vocals). These four vegan surfers play awesome hardcore,
with lots of
melodies and hooks. Their lyrics are inspirational and really smart
(but fun at times, too!). They have two albums out: For God and Country, and A
Comprehensive Guide to Moderne Rebellion. For God and Country is a
better album, but they both rock!
On Fat Wreck Chords, West Hill's (CA) Strung Out has two records out. They
play very melodic punk rock, and have great, cool, lyrics. The band is:
Jake (guitar), Jason (vocals), Rob (guitar), Jim (bass), Jordan (drums).
American Lie -
A Strung Out Page Really cool page with interviews, reviews, discography,
merchandise and more, plus some info on another punk band called Blount
(see the Fearless record link lower on this page).
The Unofficial
Strung Out Page Another cool Strung Out page, with clips, lyrics,
discography and more.
Great pop-punk out of San Diego, California! They have two CD's, "Cheshire
Cat" on Grilled Cheese Records, and "Dude Ranch" on MCA. The band is: Mark
Hoppus (bass/vocals), Tom Delonge (guitar/vocals), Travis (drums).
Go to the official page!
Probably the best loved punk band of all time! These guys have been around
for 15 years or so, and have been turning out first-class punk
the whole time. They have funny and sad lyrics, and their music is just
amazing. And of course, Fat Mike (vocals and bass) runs Fat Wreck Chords,
one of the premier newschool punk labels.
Another great band out of NoCal, on Epitaph
records. Ska is a big influence in their music, as Tim Armstrong and
Matt Freeman used to be in Operation Ivy, the best ska-punk outfit ever!
This band is easily one of my favourites. They play amazing ska-punk, with
some melodic hardcore influence. From Sunset Beach, California, the band
is: Johnee Trash (vocals/guitar), (slur) Ian Cone (vocals, guitar), Bob
Herco (Drumz), Adumb Lohrbach (Bass/Vocals). They have two releases out,
a full length on Liberation called "That's Business" and an EP on Burning
Heart called "Wusappening?!." I have "That's Business" and I love every
song. Every song on that album also has relevancy to my life, and no doubt
to the lives of many teenage punks. The music is simple in structure,
but the band arranges it very diversely, giving us great harmonies
between vocals and excellent guitar work, and cool bass riffs. The
vocal harmonies between Johnee and Ian (these two share lead vocal
position depending on the song) are rad too. Well enough analyzing, these guys
are extremely talented, and young, and I hope to hear tons of new stuff
from them in the future! Check em out!
Lots of cool shit here.
Here's a bunch of links to more kick ass punk band. I'll try to get more
info and designate each their own section soon, but until then this'll have
to do!
There are a lot of cool punk record labels with great newschool bands on
them. My fave are Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph, cause they got the best
bands! Here some links to those two, and others.

TFP's new album came out March 11, 1997!
It's called "Unleashed." I've
gotten a copy and it rules! It's even better than their first album "Rev"
even though they don't have Scott Radinsky in the band anymore (see
below). Dennis, the rhythm guitarist, is now singing and he has a great
voice. The production, mixing, engineering and overall feel and sound
of the music is amazing; Ryan Greene has done another great job! Pick up
this album as soon as possible, cause it really rocks.
The former
lead singer, Scott Radinsky, has been kicked out because of his inability
to tour during the summer because he's a pro pitcher for the Los Angeles
Dodgers. The rhythm guitarist, Dennis, is now also the singer. Scott is
now playing in Pulley, a all-star punk band with Jordan from Strung Out
(drums), Jim from Strung Out (guitar), Mike from Scared Straight, which is
no longer in service, (guitar, and Matt, who used to be in face to face
(bass). They have two albums out on Epitaph.

The new album is out on Outpost Recordings and
it's called "Act Your Age". It's great, but I wish there were more fast
songs! The two fastest songs on the album, "She Dumb" and "Grow Up" are
both kick ass. But the slower ones are fun too, especially "She's Anti"
and "Nowhere Slow".

Adhesive
A great melodic hardcore band from Sweden. I heard one song on the Bad
Taste Quality Punk Rock comp and was hooked!
Operation Ivy Info,
pictures and more for another one of my favourite bands. It sucks they
aren't still togethor. These guys, including Tim and Matt from Rancid,
defined ska-punk, and if you don't have their "Energy" album on Lookout
(with all released material I think) you're missing out on one of the best
punk records ever!
Three
Impotent
Males Nice official page for this good Sarnia, Ontario melodic skate-punk
band.
The Official Out of
Order Page Great home page for my favourite ska/ska-punk band (along
with Buck-O-Nine)! These
guys are awesome; they play "real" ska (that puts trendy No Doubt, who try to
play real ska in some of their songs, to shame!) and ska-punk, and it's
all rad. Great vocals, drums, horns and guitar (well that's everything I
guess)! But I just heard from Mario (Sax) that they broke up, which really
bites!

Raw
Energy This is easily the best indie label in Canada (IMO), and they
have a bunch of really awesome SoOntario punk bands signed, like Five Knuckle
Chuckle, Three Impotent Males, Random Killing, Trunk, Marilyn's Vitamins,
the Tirekickers and more! All of these bands have a distinctive sound, and
of course they all rock! This web site, run by Ryan Izzard, really does
justice to the label's awesomeness. Sound clips, info on the bands, pics,
