BAFFLING GRUNTS IN LOCH NESS Reported by Andy Cobley
SEEN IN DUNDEE COURIER ON JULY 19 1995

MYSTERIOUS GRUNTS AND GROANS HAVE BEEN HEARD COMING FROM THE DEPTHS OF LOCH NESS THE SOUNDS HAVE BEEN PICKED UP BY A MINI-SUB 450 FEET DOWN IN THE MURKY LOCH. BILL BOLTON, ONE OF THE MINI SUB PILOTS WHICH CONDUCTS RESEARCH AND ALSOCARRIES PASANGERS SAID, " I WAS DOWN WITH A PARTY OF FIVE THIS MORNING AND THEY ALL HEARD IT."JUST A COUPLE OF GRUNTS THEN NOTHING. WE FIRST HEARD THE NOISES IN THE SAME AREA A FEW WEEKS AGO AND IGNORED THEM. WE HAD A LAUGH ABOUT IT".

FELLOW MINI-SUB PILOT ALLEN WHITFIELD, WHO HAS DIVED ALL OVER THE WORLD AND CAN DISTINQUISH THE SOUNDS OF DIFFERENT SEA MAMMALS, RECKONED IT WAS NOTHING LIKE A DOLPHIN OR WHALE. HE SAID " I HAVE FREQUENTLY HEAD THE CALLS OF SEA MAMMALS BUT THIS WAS ODD". BILL ADDED "DOLPHINS MAKE A CHATTERING SOUND WHILE WHALES MAKE A NOISE WHICH IS LONG AND HIGH-PITCHED. THIS WAS MORE LIKE A GRUNT, A VERY DEEP GRUNT. "THE SOUNDS WHERE PICKED UP BY A SERIES OF TRANSDUCERS LINKING THE SUBMARINE TO IT'S CONTROL BASE ON THE LOCH SHORE. THE AREA OF THE LOCH WHERE THE NOISES WERE HEARD LIES BELOW THE VILLAGE OF ABRIACHAN ON ITS WESTERN SHORE.

Comment: Sounds like the mysterious "Carmel thump" from California, reported in the Strange Magazine 10 most strangest list.
