Your Computer Community

Why do I talk about a Computer Community?
It is a small set of computers. It might be a VM platform, it may be for your household, or your extended family and a couple of friends or it may be a small support business. In these situations the affordability of server farms to provide monitoring is not appropriate or affordable. In these situations the overheads associated are much too high both in terms of investment, capability and time. But it is these computer communities that make up a huge portion of the make-up of the internet, vulnerable "Internets of Things" and vulnerable people.

By being up front to defining your Computer Community is a long step to identifying the stakeholders. It also scopes and provides a perspective on the depth and objectives you are setting. It also gives you a perspective to the point at which you achieve success and the tools and resources that you can expect to have available to you. Know that you can achieve to higher levels within the community. Some pieces and processes will be applicable and usable in beyond your Computer Community. But your measure of success has to be, should be, back with the original Computer Community you set to service.

Why Limit this Perspective?
Limits on the perspective frame the political, cultural and technical environment you will be working within.

• Stakeholders within or around your Computer Community may not see or understand the need, value or cost.
• Stakeholders within or around your Computer Community don't know the extent of the problem or issue.
• Your Computer Community may not have the budget or resources to go with a large commercial solution.
• You want to decrease your time in "FireFight" mode to support or administer your Computer Community.
• You want to limit the scope of the effort needed to solve a pain point.
• You can scope the "Defence in Depth" approach to those fill-in gaps within a scope.
• You can limit Information Overload and get better and better at handling it.
• With solid limits you may be able to better define and justify how and why you are doing things.

Summary
Knowing who you are working to please makes the scope of what you do, how you do it, when you do it easier and more likely to come out successfully.
