All my house is equipped with switched receptacles at the base of walls, there are no ceiling or wall lamp fittings.
Stores in Ottawa have stopped carrying wall-mounted lamps with a cord to use with them.
Here's a photo of one at a friend's house that I like - simple and clean, with most of the light directed upwards.
Of course I'll use compact fluorescents with them, so there are no heating problems.
