CINERAMA and large-frame motion picture exhibition in Canada
The Roadshow/Reserved Seat Engagement Era: 1954-1974
1 September 2012 REVISE
These lists record data for cinemas in Canada presenting films in CINERAMA, VistaVision, the various 70mm processes (Todd-AO, Super Panavision, Super Technirama, Ultra Panavision, post-1963 ‘CINERAMA’) and IMAX commencing with the initial 20-year period when large-frame exhibition was introduced to the Canadian market.
The 10 cities where these cinemas were/are located - Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Quebec City, London, Hamilton - are listed in chronological order by date of first large-frame print screening. Likewise, the cinemas within each market are ordered according to the commencement of large-frame release engagements, and dates when these venues subsequently closed or altered mode of operation are specified. A local CinemaScope premiere date - which was, in fact, the first occasion when a ‘widescreen’ motion picture was exhibited in each city - is also included.
Additional lists chronicle playdates in the four largest Canadian urban centres - Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa/Gatineau (Hull) - for 70mm exhibition after 1974 and for stereophonic 35mm exhibition between 1953 and 1982 (including the introduction of Dolby SVA), as well as for stereoscopic exhibition in 1953/54. Also recorded are installations of anamorphic widescreen projection (CinemaScope, Superscope, Panavision),and Dolby Six-Track Stereo / DTS 70mm capability in cinemas in these four markets.
IMAX playdates in thirteen Canadian centres have been tracked on a continuing basis.
Finally, a listing of Canadian-produced motion pictures which were exhibited in 70mm widescreen.
This data has been compiled principally by consulting advertisements appearing in daily newspapers as preserved on microfilm - and will therefore reflect any inaccuracy and imprecision recorded in the source material.
