The week-long annual ShoWest convention, held by the National Alliance of Theatre Owners, took place in Las Vegas. The following were recognized in the closing ceremonies held on March 6th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena:

THE ROCK, directed by Michael Bay

The Hollywood Pictures action-thriller THE ROCK, starring Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris, was released domestically by Buena Vista in June 1996, and grossed $134 million domestic in 1996, placing it fourth among domestic box office leaders for the year.

Actor Of The Year
Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington appeared in two films in 1996; the drama COURAGE UNDER FIRE, directed by Edward Zwick and co-starring Meg Ryan, which was released domestically in July 1996 by Fox, and the romantic comedy THE PREACHER'S WIFE, directed by Penny Marshall and co-starring Whitney Houston, which was released domestically in December 1996 by Touchstone Pictures.

Winona Ryder starred in the drama BOYS, directed by Stacy Cochrane, and co-starring Lukas Haas, which was released domestically in May 1996 by Touchstone Pictures, and in the drama THE CRUCIBLE, directed by Nicholas Hytner, and co-starring Daniel Day-Lewis, which was released domestically in November 1996 by Fox, and appeared in the documentary LOOKING FOR RICHARD, directed by Al Pacino.
