I
am currently developing a
prototype personalized digital library portal that will provide access
to a variety of experimental services, centered on scientific, technical and
medical literature. The portal will be mediated by identity
information about the active user, to enable more relevant search
results and notification services.
The portal will use hybrid between a collaborative filtering sytem and
meta-data driven mechanism to provide serendipitous recommendations and
alerting services. Search results obtained by this service will be
clustered and offer the user search-query refinement capabilities that
are based on both semantic information extracted from retrieved content
and usage patterns.
This project will begin with an annotated bibliography of collaborative
filtering technologies that weigh the advantages and disadvantages of
differing approaches that have been
attempted by other researchers. I will also be doing a survey
of the state of "advanced" portal features in existing ditigal
libraries.
