"The sum of CPU power and user brain power is a constant."

When your ISP says that they don't support DOS, what they really mean is that they don't know how. If you are interested in trying these programs, you can find out more in DOS TCP/IP Resources. The authors of these pages have spent a great deal of time and effort in freely sharing their knowledge with others. The following is a list of the programs that I currently use plus several others that I have tried. I believe that all of them are free. A few are available in the DOS area of the PDA. NCF members may post any questions, comments or requests to ncf.sigs.pc-tech . You may also may wish to to read the DOS PPP Help Files.

Notes
- I first began experimenting with DOS TCP/IP on a 386DX-25MHz with 2M RAM and 14.4 internal modem and later a 386SX-16MHz laptop with 2M RAM and 14.4 external pocket modem. More recently I have been using a 486SX-25Mhz with 8M RAM and 14.4 internal modem and finally a P-133Mhz with 32M RAM and 28.8 external modem.
- I now use the dospppd packet driver for all my DOS internet applications. I have learned from experience that it is probably better to start with the packet driver plus a few small programs such as ping and finger to test your SLIP/PPP setup before trying the larger applications, especially the browsers.
Arachne Notes July 98
- Arachne version 1.41 beta is now available in the PDA. It comes with the dospppd packet driver (epppd.exe). It includes built-in FTP as well as e-mail.
- I have configured Arachne as described in lan.htm below. This requires setting up the packet driver (pppd.cfg, chatscr) and wattcp.cfg independently of Arachne. Having done this, it is then possible to run all of the other WATTCP applications as well.
Wattcp compatibility
If you are already running other Wattcp applications and have a working WATTCP.CFG, try to put something like this in ARACHNE.CFG:
[profile] Connection READY Hangup NUL [tcp/ip] IP_Address WATTCP TCP_Config WATTCP.CFG
