Comet Flyby

From far in the night he glimpses her
The single light among infinity
Whose path must cross with his

Fixed in his gaze she grows
Following her course unswerving
Brightens, blossoms

Her hair streams out in the wind
Banners brighter than the stars.

They draw together
Tremblingly touch
Then swing about
Following separate courses.

Still she brightens sliding from him
Then, inexorably, she begins to fade
Her radiance dims to embers.

He tracks her falling into the engulfing night
Follows her with his eyes
As though each encounter were unique
Each parting unredeemable.
