ABOUT US

The Tara Players of Ottawa
are dedicated to the production of Irish theatre and the promotion of Celtic culture. This not-for-profit company was founded in 1976 and has since staged classic, modern and contemporary dramas and comedies from and about Ireland, and by writers of Irish heritage. The plays of Yeats, O'Casey, Shaw and Synge have been presented on the same stage as the more recent works of Friel, Farrell, Hutchinson and McGuinness. As well as its regular performances at St. Patrick's Hall, (Now gone, alas.) the company has performed extensively and been honored at provincial, national and international festivals, such as the Dundalk Maytime Festival and the Acting Irish International Theatre Festival. The Tara Players welcome the participation of all residents of the Ottawa-Hull region in all aspects of the work of the company and the staging of our plays.

Why this isn't the Official Tara Website and why it exists.

This is what the Tara Players website used to look like. About two years ago, the executive appointed a young woman who had just joined the company to “redesign” the site. Due to conflicts about the viability of the new design, and because I felt the new webmaster was unpardonably rude, I withdrew myself from the company, and remove my copyrighted material from the Tara website.

I have put this site up for two reasons. First, to protect my professional reputation. I had informed the executive that if they went with the new design, the ability of people to find the Tara website would be damaged. That is to say, people searching via search engines would find it more difficult to find the Tara website. In fact, less than six weeks after the new Tara design had been put in place, the official Tara Players website effectively disappeared from sight. More explicitly, a search argument such as “live theatre Ottawa” does not turn up the Tara Players in the firsst 800 results from any of the major search engines..

The second reason was in this design of the site, each actor for the plays that I covered had their own separate page with a large picture and whatever they wanted written there. Here is an example These have disappeared from the Tara website (reducing the number of pages from approximately 170 to about 50-60). Actors pictures were reduced to thumbnail images, and all the cast on one page. Since it was my intention that each actor should have their own, individual place of glory on the Internet, and since I see no reason why they should lose that, this site is to preserve those individual pages.

Tara Players welcome new members to join us as we celebrate our 26th season. Please contact the Tara Executive 2002-2003 for further detail.

We are now selling Tara tee shirts and golf shirts at our performances! Tastefully decorated with the Tara logo, and a lovely shade of green. Tees are $12.00 and the golf shirts are $20.00. These are on sale at every Tara production.
