Joanne FABER, née STENSON

Peacely in the presence of her husband at Nepean, Ontario on Sunday, November 29th, 2009, at the age of 76 years. Joanne was the mother of Darin (JiSok Chung) of Barrhaven and Jill (Bill Good) of Powassan, Ontario. She will be missed by her 2 grandchildren, Nathan and Abby Faber- Good. Joanne was born in Madison, Wisconsin on March 5th 1933. Her father was Sten Stenson of Slinde, Sogendal, Norway and her mother was Anna G. Stenson née Ohnstad of Ohnstad, Aurland, Norway. She had 2 sisters, Unnie Johnson (Harold) of Eugene, Oregon, deceased, and Adeline Geishert (Jerome) of Madison, Wisconsin, deceased, and a brother, Stanley Stenson (Doreene Smith) of Madison, Wisconsin, deceased. Joanne and Dan were married at Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison, Wisconsin on September 4th, 1954; they were happily married for 55 years. Joanne was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and later St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ottawa, Ontario. Joanne worked and attended university while her husband, Dan, was a Radar Officer, U.S. Signal Corps, at Fort Gordon, Georgia and afterwards when he went to school at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She and her husband immigrated to Canada in 1963 and lived in Mindemoya on Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron where she taught school on the West Bay Indian Reservation. She moved to Ottawa in 1967 where she worked for Algonquin College, Bell Canada and then volunteered as a teacher at the Canadian Museum of Man. Later, when the museum changed its name, she was appointed a Founding Member of the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Québec.. For several years she was on the Board of Directors for Camp Bitobi, near Gracefield, Québec. She was the newsletter Editor for the University Women’s Club of Ottawa for several years and was active in the Nordic Society of Ottawa. She also volunteered for her husband, Dan, in founding the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) and the National Capital Genealogy Club (NCGC). Arrangements are being held privately for the family. She will be buried at the family grave site in Roselawn Memorial Park in Madison, Wisconsin. She now is content watching us from Valhalla.
