Sparton of Canada - Televisions

(Last updated, January 02, 2024)

What is this page, and why is it here?

Back in 2022 I was at a computer for long stretches with some time to kill – and found myself reading through older posts in the Antique Radio forums.

The posts allowed you to ‘sleuth along’ with debug and repairs.  Of those, I found the Antique Television discussion the most enjoyable, as in most cases you were rewarded at the end with an actual visual indication of success (e.g., a working picture on the screen).

I had restored old TVs, radios, jukeboxes, pinball machines, etc. in the past – but hadn’t really had much of a project to work on recently. I didn’t want to miss out on the ‘fun’, and so I started to look around locally for something to experiment with - wanting something from the late 50’s to mid 60’s range. I really didn’t need another working TV – so the focus was on getting something to restore.

There was very little to pick and choose from (in Nova Scotia, Canada) with most older sets having long ago gone to the dump, and most of the remaining ones in hands of people that felt they had something worth a fortune. That said - I did happen upon a lonely looking unit on Kijiji that I figured I would take a chance on:

I didn't know (and didn't care at the time) what model/make it was - but I later found out it was a 23” Black-and-White, Sparton of Canada, 23M7-T (“Ladner”).

When trying to gather data I found there really wasn't much on-line. Yes – there was some history to indicate that the Sparton of Canada company was established in 1930 in London, Ontario (Canada) by the US company, Sparks-Withington. It also noted that Sparton of Canada had manufactured radios, phonographs, household appliances and was the Canadian presser of 78’s, 45’s and LPs (on behalf of some other labels, as well as under the ‘Sparton’ label.) The www.radiomuseum.org web site had a good handful of radios listed – but TV-wise, there were just a couple off-the-cuff references to a couple models here and there.

For my repair work, I did get access to the Radio College of Canada (RCC) Television Service data for the set (provided by a kind member on the Antique Radios Forum) – but I  never did find any sort of general resource on-line.  I also didn't have direct access to all the RCC Television Service data - or for that matter, even a complete index of part numbers.

After I finished work on my TV I stumbled across bits of pieces of data here and there.  I’ve put together this basic page to tabulate some of the information I found - so that others looking for it might have better luck finding it than I originally did.

The information is limited to models between about 1952 and 1967.  This may actually be all there were as I'm not aware if there were models before that or after that.  The earliest date may make sense as Canadian-based broadcasts for TV apparently didn't start until 1952.  B&W-only sets before 1967 makes sense too, as colour broadcasts in Canada didn't start until mid 1966 and there is a news article on-line from May 1966 quoting the present of Sparton of Canada sayingt it was 'worth the wait' for colour TV sets to be considered in Canada.

The earliest sets listed below seem to mirror details from Sparton in the US - such as using the "Cosmic Eye" promotional moniker. That said, some things seem different too - for instance, the US sets did offer a line of models using "Royal Scot" names.  The Canadian sets also had a similar series of names - including some of the same names - but the actual models appear to be different and a few years later.  As of this writing, it is unknown how/if the earliest sets matched between US and Canada..

The table below still has gaps - and may have some duplicates (e.g., a model listed by model number with partial data might represent the same TV as another entry only listed by model name).  If you happen to have more data on specific units, photos of models not already captured here, alternate advertisements that might have referenced them, corrections, etc. - please feel free to get in touch.  I can be contacted via e-mail at "ac151RemoveThisBit @ ncf.ca" (remember to remove the spaces as well as "RemoveThisBit").

Note 1: I don't claim ownership of all these photos.  Some are from post-cards or other literature I have on hand - but others were taken from on-line postings or auction/store listings.  These are only provided to help illustrate/differentiate the different models/configurations.  If a picture belongs to you, and you would prefer it not to be here - just let me know and it will be removed.

Note 2: Based on an empirical review of the data, there does appear to be logic to the model numbers used for Sparton of Canada radios and TVs (at least for items from the mid 1950’s to the mid 1960’s - with ones before that and after that both using different numbering).

The general syntax (for radio or TV) appears to be:

{Number} {Letter} {Number} - {Letter}

It seems to be somewhat variable whether the hyphen is used or not. For the sake of consistency on this page, the hyphen will always be used in the table above – even if there might be documented references without the hyphen.

The first number generally reflects a key ‘figure of merit’ for the particular item (discussed below).

The first letter ends up being a sequential alpha character representing the year of the unit.  I don’t have any factory-confirmed reference for this – but it is pretty clear that the letters go up each year so an item with date code “L” would be two years newer than on one with date code “J”.  A date code table is presented under "Note 3" - below.  [[Somewhat interestingly, the part numbers do include the letter “O” – which commonly gets skipped in other ordering schemes due to potential confusion with the number “0”. Oddly enough, this confusion seems to have been real as a 1964 article clearly references “1903-K” vs. “19O3-K” – and even on-line references today seemingly use a 0 (zero) vs. an O (Oh).  While "O" was used, it does indeed appear as if "I" (likely to avoid confusion with "1") was skipped.]]

In terms of examples decoding:

The 11L5 is an eleven-tube radio (“11”) from 1961/62 (“L”)

The 8M1K is an 8-transistor radio (“8”) from 1962/63 (“M”)

For TVs, the first number represents the size of the CRT – so – the 23M7-T as a 23” CRT TV (“23”) from 1962/63 (“M”). [Note there seems to be an exception for the 22G1 and 22G4 models - where these are 21" CRTs, but have alternate tuner configurations.]

Where a radio is included as 'part' of a TV console/cabinet, the radio portion is referred to as part of the overall TV model.  So - for instance, the 23N7 TV combo would refer to the "23N7 radio circuit", as opposed to a separate radio-only number.

The 3rd element (2nd number) doesn’t seem to so much have any particular assignment in and of itself – but instead it is used to distinguish individual models for a given year.  For instance – in one year there might be numerous 23” sets released. These would all have the same CRT size – and were out in the same year – so the first two elements for all would be “23M”. The 3rd element was used to make up unique references:

23M1-T
23M2-M
23M2-S
23M2-V
23M3-M
23M4-C
23M6-C
23M7-T
23M8-T
23M9-M

There seemingly could be any other sort of variation between the M1, M2, M3, M4, etc. as was deemed by the designers (e.g., some might be standalone TVs, some might be combo units with AM radio and Phono only, others might be combo units with AM/FM/FM Stereo/Phono, etc., some might have main power transformers, others might be line powered. Based on this it might seem like the prefix (e.g., 23M2, 23M3, etc.) might end up being a ‘chassis’ number – but that doesn’t really seem to be the case as evidenced by the fact that (for instance) 23M2, 23M4, 23M6, 23M7 and 23M8 all use the identically same schematic. So – at that level they’re electrically ‘the same’ and not unique in that way.

Notice in this list that there are 3 different “23M2” models - -S, -V and -M. These would be expected to be identical electrically – but would differ in terms of their cabinet ‘style’.  As cabinet style doesn’t come into play with schematics, etc. - schematic data (SAMS, RCC data, etc.) will refer to only the first part of the model. This is also the ‘model’ number which will normally appear on the electrical chassis itself (e.g., 23M8 vs. 23M8-T).

The full (dash) part number is what would normally be expected to appear on the overall unit/cabinet. Interestingly, the serial number appears to be formed as part of the chassis number vs. the cabinet – so (for instance) an item would be serialized on the chassis as 23M71217.

The 2nd letter – at least for TVs (and presumably for radios too) tends to capture the ‘style’ of the cabinet (e.g. tabletop/portable vs. console vs. low-boy, etc.) That said – the 17J2 on RadioMuseum doesn’t show any 2nd letter on the back of the cabinet.

In terms of TV cabinet styles, these are admitted guesses, but it seems:

Model Suffix
-C "Combo" (TV + radio and/or phono) Console
-K Tabletop (no legs)
-L Lowboy - With long legs
-M "Modern?" styling?
-R
-S "Stand" - looks to be sitting on an integral 'stand' (short/stubby legs
-T "Tall Cabinet" - TV screen above, speaker below
-V Console shape - but TV only (vs. combo)?

Sometimes there could be another character on the end, and if so that likely relates to the finish - e.g., with 21E1TW -  the "W" signfies 'walnut.'

Walnut = W, Danish Walnut = D, Mahogany = M

Note 3:  Many of the postcards listed in the table appear to be from "Dexter Press" and the post card number apparently allows you to date them - xref: Dating Dexter Press Postcards.  Dates will also come from other elements, such as when schematics are published, etc. (RCC, SAMS) - or when advertisements for the units appear.  While those other elements provide some back-up, dates are generally listed based on the guestimated date-code assignment, below:

Date Code Year
D 1954/55
E 1955/56
F 1956/57
G 1957/58
H 1958/59
J 1959/60
K 1960/61
L 1961/62
M 1962/63
N 1963/64
O 1964/65
P 1965/66

Note 4:  An entry of "Yes" means there's no power transformer in the unit.  "No" means there is a power transformer used.

Note 5: With the exception of some units at the end of the 1960's which employ solid state circuits, all TVs seem to have been tube-based, point-to-point wired - with no printed circuit boards being used (at least for items in the mid-50's to mid-60's range). Promotional literature overtly makes reference to the use of point-to-point writing vs. circuit boards.

Note 6:  It seems that the same general chassis design was essentially used year-after-year, with slight updates as dictated by the day (e.g., maybe started out with a 5U4 tube-based rectifier in the power supply – with a later release otherwise being identical, but now using solid-state diodes – or earlier units using a tube-baed 6AL5 tube-based phase detector, newer using a dual detector diode package).  In many cases, schematics will maintain the same reference designators for items that didn't change (vs. there being a whole new schematic).

Note 7: While schematic and alignment data is provided in the RCC information and in other places – these references generally don’t have generic part lists – and so (for instance) there’s no overt listing of part numbers for things like flybacks, yokes or even transformers. A review of an actual unit does seem to have markings on individual parts – but these seem to be Sparton-specifc numbers (vs. general numbers you might otherwise find cross-references for) e.g.:

large electrilyic cap marked as 17AR60
power circuit-breaker marked 26AR43
transformer in the vertical circuit: 21AR25-8
speaker marked 39BR50
VHF tuner marked 16CR59-2
Top-hat rectifier diodes marked 19AR17

If anyone recognizes this style/sort of part numbering as beling to a partiuclar supplier (other than Sparton of Canada), etc. - I’d be interested to know.

Note 8: I don't currently have access to a complete Index nor full list of RCC manuals - and so I do expect that some data above could still be supplemented by details in those manuals.  The earliest RCC Television Service Manual Supplement currently on hand is #16, from 1955.  The most recent is #57 from 1964.  Based on known part numbers, models are expected to extend into at least 1966.

The table mostly lists black and white sets.  That said - there seemingly were colour sets made in the latter part of the 1960's- as here's an excerpt from the "Canadian Broadcaster - Volume 25, Number 8" (April 28, 1966):

"Earlier this month, Sparton of Canada, Ltd. released two color models and will add five more later in the year. They include 19, 23 and 25 inch sets. In black and white sets, Sparton is placing its emphasis on portables, table models and consolettes."

It is not expected that models extended much past this (if at all) as there are on-line references which say "...Sparton of Canada, which had continued its production of radio and televisions into the mid-1960s, now also converted to military electronics manufacturing.”  Also, as supported by the data in the table, other references stating that television (and radio) production didn't extend past 1967.
