Escalante Canyon at Coyote Gulch

The red dots on the map show approximately where the photos below were taken, at points about twenty paces apart along the rim of the canyon. The center of each photo, and thus the center of rotation, is in front of the prominent 'knob', marked by '+' on the map. The photos were taken the morning of May 3, 2004, using a Canon PowerShot A75.

Steven's Arch is visible in the background at the top right, especially in image frames 2 to 7 (the image number is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of your browser). In middle foreground of images 11 and 12, you can see the trail that descends from "The Crack" down into Coyote Gulch. There are people coming up the trail in images 17 through 20 (they are directly below Steven's arch in image 18, then further up the trail in later images). Those people (and the panaroma at the bottom of the page) give a sense of the huge scale of this landscape.

Here's a smaller version (better if you have a low-bandwidth connection or low-performance computer):

The scene above is only part of the view from that location. Below is a 350-degree panorama from the ridge (at the eastern-most red dot, at 501445E / 4141391N, WGS84). This photo best viewed at full size. To view full-size (470K), click on the image, then expand it to full size in your browser and scroll. (If you are using IE6, after loading the image, expand the image to full size by resting your cursor on the image and then clicking the red 'ball' that appears at the bottom-right of the image).

A view from space, below, provides a fourth perspective of this spectacular area. The image covers approximately the same area as in the topo map above (with red dots along the rim where the photos were taken). The 'knob' is in the center of the image, casting a shadow northward. The panoramic photo above is from the location of the right-most red dot in the satellite image.

Coyote Gulch is in the Grand Staircase National Monument, southeast of Escalante, Utah, off Hole In The Rock road at Forty One Mile Ridge. The dayhike down The Crack, up the Gulch, and out near Josef Hamblin Arch is one of my favourites.
