Birth of Frances Loveday Tanner 1956-10-02

Letter from Dick Tanner to his mother-in-law, Edith Russell in Seaforth.

1046 Fisher Oct 3 1956
Dear Mrs. Russell,

I hope these are for brief notes and not for Christmas cards!

Winnifred was just about to sit down to dinner when she decided she had better not. I think it was about 7:30 when we got to the hospital and Dr. Smith 'phoned about an hour later with the good news. After phoning you (and getting the dishes done) went around to see Winnifred and Frances. The former looked very well, and of course was very happy to have it over. The latter doesn't look like much, but screams healthily anyway. I thought she looked a little fat-faced, so she'll be a match for Lois. "Fine little girl was just the doctor's way of talking, she weighed 8 lbs odd, which I'd call a fine big girl.

Winnifred is at the Grace Hospital this time; they certainly do things differently there; no waiting around; and a good thing too. I guess Dr. Smith just got there in time.

No doubt Winnifred will be writing you almost at once...

...so she can give you more details.

I'm on holidays as of this morning. W. got Lois well indoctrinated before the day, L. tells me 'Mama doctor gotta baby,' 'Mama hopsitol,' 'When baby comes home,' etc. etc. etc., not to mention 'Daddy stay home Lois.'

Winnifred's forethought extended to five or six pages of operating instructions covering all phases from diapers to dusting. I see Wednesday morning one defrosts refrigerators, so I'll get at it.

I know you're as pleased as we are at the news. Hope you have a little leisure to enjoy the splendid fall weather we have from time to time.

Love, Dick
